Hokie Loop
- The Cowgill Hall Studio Extension
The Hokie Loop is a proposition for an extension of the current studios of the College of Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. The project involved adding a library, a lecture room, and a series of workshops, that all needed to be separated in terms of proximity, noise and vibrations. To achieve these separations, the building is constructed in a linear fashion, and then bent to a loop. The loop does not only offer the needed separations, but also protected external spaces around its perimeter.
First, the program is analyzed and a correlation is found between proximity of spaces and their level of produced noise.
Then, the spaces are arranged in after the correlation found in previous stage.
Lastly, the spaces are arranged in a way that does fit the site and the program well, both internally and externally.
From Program to Space
The internal organization of spaces are based on the idea that serving spaces dictate the extent of served spaces. The major spaces that respond to the programmatic needs are therefore determined by the spaces that serve them or allow for the functions to take place.
Consequently, the serving spaces fill multiple functions; ordering the programmatic elements into a structured organization, loadbearing structure, serving spaces and as separation between the elements.
The shape of the building lends itself well for semi enclosed spaces that can be utilized for various functions such as a green roof and a covered plaza for large scale construction
The majority of the circulation around these spaces occur on the outer edge of the loop where it can connect to the surroundings.
