Savannah Stadium
- Urban Multipurpose Stadium
The Savannah Stadium is located in an urban renewal project in downtown Savannah, GA. To build stadiums of this scale in a downtown area is largely unprecedented in USA where stadiums are moved out to the perimeter of cities. Keeping the Stadium in the downtown area pushes the design to enhance the everyday urban life even outside of sport events.
The public realm is extended onto the stadium through shops, restaurants, bars, walk ways and plazas. It also blocks the noise from the heavily used, nearby highway.
The four main entrances are in close relationship to the pedestrian access points to make the stadium readily available.
The stadium maintains its link to the city by providing a constant visual connection between the stands and the surrounding neighborhood. One of the upper short sides was removed to provide views over the city.
By extending past the stadium perimeter, the roof does not only protect the players and spectators, but also the public plazas.
